Cathryn Hankla
Artist statement: My paintings are experiments in rhythm and color. The music comes from the vibration of hues in concert with each other, juxtaposed in patterns. As a poet, I work to balance every word so that there are no dominant parts and every choice contributes to the whole. As a visual artist, too, I’m more interested in the relationships between colors and shapes than in creating a focal point. Simple geometry often structures my work, even when it’s not readily apparent.
About the artist: In addition to The Market Gallery, Hankla’s recent painting exhibitions include juried shows at the Todd Gallery of Middle Tennessee State University; Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA; The Art Museum of Western Virginia, City Show; and Olin Gallery, Roanoke College. She was named a runner-up in the Open Studios / New American Paintings competition for the Mid-Atlantic region. Professor of English and Creative Writing at Hollins University, she has taught filmmaking and cross-media work as well as creative writing and literature.
