Debby Lee
Debby Lee resides in Roanoke, Virginia and is a 2002 graduate of Hollins University. She majored in Studio Art with a focus in sculpture and has a minor in Film and Photography. Debby’s photography has centered around Josy, a vintage mannequin purchased from a local dress shop. Debby says, “I have great respect for older things. My house, antiques, vintage clothing and some of my best friends have a little age on them. “Josy’s Big Day” began as an experiment in photographing my mannequin, Josette, in one of my favorite vintage dresses. Since my house was built in 1924 and had not been “modernized”, it was interesting to move her around imagining what she would have been doing on a typical day during the 1950’s. I used a Holga camera which has a plastic lens and requires no focusing.” Josy has now moved forward in time and appears in color. She has recently been spotted at the beach, skiing, playing tennis and has plans to fly as a co-pilot in a tourist flight over Roanoke.
Debby Lee’s sculpture is figurative and usually carved from soapstone and various types of alabaster. She begins by randomly roughing the block to expose the grain and “get to know” the stone. As suggested curves begin to appear she pursues them until they become physical and she follows them to the edge; so the figures are often abbreviated. They possesses a soft, feminine quality despite their hard substance.
Debby is one of the gallery’s VPs for Exhibitions in addition to full-time employment with Carilion Clinic and an active family life.
