Joseph Wilson

Landscape Painter

Joe has been painting for over 30 years. His primary interest is in oil but also works in watercolor, etching and photography. Initially self taught, he has also attended numerous workshops and classes, with teachers including Ron Boehmer, Frank Hobbs, Robert Stuart, Zoltan Szabo and Judy Betts.

Painting both outdoors before the subject and in his studio from sketches, photographs and memory, his style might be described as a combination of impressionism and realism. Recent quotations from the 100 year old active painter Milford Zornes in The Artist’s Magazine apply to Joe’s own art: “I mainly want to convey to the viewer the I experience and sensation which I had… A painting is a graphic poem, doing graphically what a poem hopes to be with words.” Joe’s comment: “With the abundance of beauty around me how can I keep from painting”.

He has a BS degree in Textile Chemistry from Georgia Tech and was employed for many years in textile dyeing and printing, producing colors on textiles and carpet.

His work is exhibited at Artists in Cahoots Gallery, Lexington, VA; Co-Art Gallery, Staunton; The Market Gallery, Roanoke; and Allegheny Highlands Arts Center, Clifton Forge; plus area art shows, where he has received numerous awards, including two Best in Show, three First and five Second prizes.
