Tom Lawson

Tom Lawson, a former lawyer, has been painting as a primary occupation for about fifteen years.  He lives in Daleville and shows his work extensively in galleries and shows in Roanoke and the surrounding region.  His work has been exhibited at the Art Museum of Western Virginia and at Roanoke College, Ferrum College, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia.

Artist’s Statement
I hope the encounter with the figure, and later with the evolving painting, will activate unconscious processes that participate in the production of the work.  By tempering these processes through conscious control, I aim for a unified work that achieves freedom in execution while honoring rules of color and composition and maintaining a recognizable relationship to the figure.
